I had the Brewer family from Washington today.  We fished the marshes in the lower Pamlico River again and after the hot bite yesterday, I was really excited to see Amy and Jeff and their two young children, Delaney (5) and Ben (6) catch a handful of slot drum.  I knew it would be a challenging day with young children.  This fishery and the way I like to fish required covering alot of ground and making alot of long accurate casts.   Sometimes you must resort to other means to keep their attention span.  I pulled right out of the marina and blew up the cast net with a bunch of little menhaden.  Playing with the baits in the live well kept them occupied for a good while.   I ran right back to the areas where I had the best action yesterday and we couldn’t even crack a scale.  The stiff SW wind had muddied up the water and also dropped the already low water level, which doesn’t typically help any type of fishing.  After picking along way too long without a bite, we finally managed a slot drum for Jeff.  A little while later after running to another area, Amy hooked up and caught her first fish ever.  Then Delaney reeled in 17 inch pup, her first fish drum ever and Ben a small flounder.  We noticed lots of greentail shrimp popping nearby and threw the cast net again for an educational moment with the kids.  It’s important for our younger generations to see where their food comes from.  Sometimes a fun day on the water is not so much about how many fish you catch but more about the experience enjoying some beautiful scenery. Tough fishing today but a great time and some memorable experiences!
