7 Year Old + 200 Speckled Trout = Education

For nearly 6 solid hours, Galen and Gabe caught speckled trout at an average rate of about 3 fish out of 4 casts. Gabe caught about 50 by himself and his attention span started diverting to netting the fish, helping me put tags in them, and then carefully releasing them. He received an excellent outdoor education today.

Most of the fish were smaller trout, but we did have a few keepers in the mix. I’m really glad to see such a large biomass of small trout………that means the big ones have been spawning productively. Don’t get your panties in such a wad over winter trout kills and other perceived threats to the resource because these guys really do have an amazing ability to reproduce. We always have plenty of trout in the system. Galen and I actually got tired of catching them. It’s great fun to get a young angler like Gabe on some really solid fishing action like today. With some of our fishing and especially when taking kids, the old saying is true…….”Size doesn’t matter”.
