Scott and Tom drove up from Greenville, SC to check out North Carolina’s old drum fishery. Well, they got badly spoiled. After swearing to me they didn’t plan on wearing the same outfit, we started out the day with a little yearling that was not much longer than about 30 inches. All I was hearing was, “Good gosh, look at the size of that fish……Wow!……..what a fish…..that’s the biggest drum I’ve ever seen!” Without diminishing his catch and the excitement of the moment, I explained to him that it was a small one. As they kept coming throughout the morning, I started to lose count late in the morning so I asked Tom and Scott how many we had released. They were a little fuzzy on the number, too, but they replied that we have caught a least 1000 pounds of drum today. I got a kick out of that and we started figuring up how many based on a average weight of 40 pounds…………well………….you do the math. Scott had plenty of opportunities today to perfect a new technique called “Paddycake” he liked to play with these fish while fighting them. Needless to say he was giving them plenty of chances to get away. All jokes aside, this is as good as red drum fishing gets on Planet Earth!
