Highs and Lows

Yesterday, we had our slowest trip of the season (or perhaps the last few seasons)………..catching 1 striper. Mike and Alan hung in there for some tough fishing. It wasn’t from lack of effort. Even the best fisheries have off days, although they are rare on the Roanoke. On a positive note, our batting average was great……got one bite and we caught him. Lulls in our fishing usually don’t last long, as conditions this time of year rapidly change, allowing us to use that to our advantage. Although Mike didn’t catch a striper, he was pretty good catching some of the other species.

Today, we picked up the pace a little more, catching what we needed and keeping 8 nice ones for the cooler. Betsy, Walter, and Alvin had a great time and enjoyed a beautiful late winter day on the Roanoke River. Many of you may have seen Alvin on the popular UNC-TV show, Exploring North Carolina, as he one of the state’s foremost experts on reptiles. I’m glad the fishing was good today because it’s still a little early to go looking at snakes and turtles, although we did see one turtle getting some sun on a log……a sign of spring?
