We’ve been doing well on the speckled trout the last week or so on the lower Pamlico, lower Pungo, and Pamlico Sound. The trout seem a bit more scattered, which is usual for this time of year, as it’s a transitional time when the trout a spawning in the Sound. Soft plastics on light jig heads have been the mainstay of our arsenal. Zman Swimming Trout Trickz and MinnowZ in natural colors and anything with a light or dark green seem to be very effective. Also some of the scented jerk shadz have been effective and providing a slightly different presentation. It’s always a good idea to mix up the presentation a little to see what action they are keying in on the most. We fish most of our soft plastics on the 3/16 ounce Trout Eyez jig heads and we bump. the weight up to 1/4 ounce on windy days. The redfish have been very scattered and really not very patternable yet. We sometimes catch them mixed in with the trout and typically on prominent sandy points with current. The red fishing should improve considerably as more fish migrate into the rivers following the baitfish. I expect in a week or two, we’ll be seeing some schools in certain areas and catching them on topwater and fly.
