Steve and Randall had a nice stroke of luck today while fishing the Pamlico, as an entire school of 24-26″ stripers surfaced chasing bait near where we were fishing. We already had a great day catching them on top and subsurface baits, but when that whole school came up, were were ready to take advantage of the situation. It was nonstop topwater action for about 45 minutes………hooking big fish and having others follow the hooked fish up. It was quite the site. We were picking off the followers behind the hooked fish, but most of the time, you just needed to have a bait in the water and you’d get a bite. This was some of the most explosive striper action I’ve seen since we were catching them on topwater in early January on the lower Roanoke.
The Pamlico has been very impressive the last few days, producing numbers like the Roanoke. It has been a nice change of scenery from the Roanoke. The flows on the Roanoke have not been ideal lately. We can still catch fish up there……just not the numbers we’re used to. The water is dropping from 20,000 to 10,000 cfs tomorrow, which should shake things up a bit on the lower end by later this week and also fire off the shad bite in Weldon. Get ready…….it’s going to be a great spring. It already is.
