March Shadness

Around here, it’s called “March Shadness”……although we may tune in to a game or two, especially when the Heels are playing well. I don’t get to do as much shad fishing as I’d like to because we are so focused on the pre-spawn stripers in the lower reaches of the rivers; however, being a Tarboro native, it’s in my blood. I took my good client, Bob, up to Weldon for his first ever shad outing yesterday. The fish did their job. Bob caught his first shad ever and a bunch more as well as developing his fly fishing skills to where he was consistently getting fly bites. His hand-tied fly darts were doing the trick. Fly fishing with a relatively light weight rod with fully sinking line for shad and stripers in a fast flowing tailrace river like the Roanoke in Weldon is not as easy as it seems. It takes some time to get “dialed in”, and that’s exactly what Bob was able to do in just a matter of hours, which alone is a great accomplishment.

The hickory shad bite in Weldon is on, and we will be spending more time up there before the striper bite really gets going, although I think there are already plenty of fish up there. We don’t have any open days until May, but still give me a call if you want to get on the water. I can get you out with some great guides who will show you the quality experience you deserve.

Last Remaining Openings for Weldon Striper Fishing:

May 5(pm), 10-13 Get one before they are gone!
