This past week, fishing has picked up significantly. Lower than needed flows earlier in the season hindered the migration of the masses, so we were essentially beating on a few nice schools within range of Weldon during the first week or two of the season. Now that flows are stepping up to optimal levels for the spawn and water temps are consistently climbing into the mid-60’s the fish have started to spawn (just a little). This squally weather, rain, and lower daytime temps have stalled the spawn, keeping water temps just below the what they need to be to send these fish into their annual spawning frenzy. The next couple of warm days and evenings ought to really fire them off. I would expect to see some serious spawning this weekend and into the beginning of next week. In the meantime, more and more fish have been getting up there, and we have been consistently catching 50-100 fish on our half day trips. I seriously believe with this slightly delayed spawn and heavier flows, the best of the fishing is yet to come.
Here are some picture from last week. On Tuesday morning, we were fortunate to have C.J. out on the boat. Angels n Camo, which is local non-profit based in Beaufort County, sponsored the trip and was able to make C.J.’s fishing dreams come true.
