Striper fishing on the Roanoke River in Weldon this past week has been awesome. We’ve been catching fish on just about every type of bait. My fly anglers have had and excellent bite and those fishing light spinning gear have caught them on topwater plugs, walk-the-dog style baits, Z-Man MinnowZ, SwimmerZ, and StreakZ, Zoom Flukes, live shad minnow, dead shad minnows, and cut white shad. We have observed spawning activity just about every day at dawn and dusk and the fish spawned heavily all night Sat. night and probably Sun. night around this big full moon. Is the best of it over? I’m not sure, but I’m heading up there tonight again for my final string of trips this week and will be up there through Sunday. We should still be in store for some great fishing and fun experiences to come as we wind down the 2012 spring striper season in Weldon.
Following Mother’s Day, I will be back home on the Pamlico and Pungo and will checking out the bite on our resident stripers as they continue to swim back down the Tar River following their spawn. We should have plenty of those to fall back on and hopefully the topwater bite pans out when the conditions are right. I’ve been missing it after all the great fishing we had in Washington in March. Surely the speckled trout bite will continue to be consistent, with excellent topwater opportunities in the early mornings throughout late May and June. The flatfish bite should continue to improve as more of them move into the river and I will be on the lookout for the puppy and slot drum making an appearance in their usual locations. When conditions are right, we will be doing much more puppy and slot drum fishing in the Eastern Pamlico River and Pamlico Sound this summer, as they are my favorite fish to catch on light tackle. If you are interested in a mixed bag trip on the Pamlico River, give me a call at 252-945-9715 or shoot me an email at [email protected] for more info on availability.
Below are some pictures from the past week. I tried to include at least one from each trip. Enjoy all the happy client photos!
