Hurricane Irene Report for Beaufort County

I never thought that waking up to an orchestra of chainsaws and blowers this morning would be so nice. After spending the day cleaning up after Irene, we still have quite a bit of work ahead of us. Damage ranged from catastrophic losses to a little inconvenient yard maintenance. A buddy of mine living on the river said he had 7-9 feet of water under his house. McCotter’s Marina is a wreck. The storm surge in certain areas of the river was extraordinary and the flooding in town from rain and swollen creeks was even more impressive. With a very pregnant wife, of which I am most grateful, I’m pretty much a one man army here at the house, but I am lucky to have some very good friends who were willing to lend a hand with some heavy lifting. We probably have just as many if not more mature hardwoods around our house than anybody in my part of the neighborhood, and we were lucky to only have a medium sized hickory take out part of our backyard fence. I can’t believe we didn’t take one on the house. Some people around us did. We feel very fortunate and don’t want to ever see another storm of this size packing any higher winds. Best wishes to all with their cleanup.
