Better Lucky than Good With the Winter Redfish!

We went on a mission today to find some winter redfish and had an unlikely chain of events that led us to some fish. Jerry Dilsaver from Southport accompanied Joey Van Dyke and I in the eastern Pamlico River today. Jerry will be writing a story in N.C. Sportsman which will come out next year. The day started out a little slow. We found a handful of fish in one particular creek…enough to get our day going but we had alot more work to do. As we were searching for some more fish, we saw a whole bunch of ducks getting up off the water and start whirling around. In our state of curiosity and awe, we idled over near them to watch. As we eased into this little bay kinda nonchalantly and really focusing more on the ducks, we looked around us and saw nothing but mud boils (fish kicking up mud as the noise of the boat disturbed them). We grabbed a rod, casted, and immediately hooked a nice slot drum. I had a rod in my hand that I had just casted out near the bank. The first fish came to the boat quickly and I put my rod in the rodholder to net and dehook the fish. As we were posing for a picture with the first fish, the rod in the rodholder doubled over with an even nicer fish. After the frenzy was over, we fish the area and ended up making our day with a few more quality slot drum. What a fun way to spend a winter day!
