That’s what 11 year-old Jake said after catching a few giant red drum this morning. We all though that was pretty funny. We caught what we needed, and so did Capt. Scott and his crew. The highlight of the big fish fishing was an exceptional fish that measured 49″ to the fork of the tail (52″ to the tip). That’s a big one. They get a little bigger, but not much.
These guys were lucky to experience the giant drum as well as some stellar light tackle fishing at the end of the trip. We ventured inshore for some smaller drum on light tackle. We ended up hooking a handful of slot drum, an overslot drum, a keeper flounder, and about 20 undersized puppy drum. The 15-18″ puppy drum are super thick this year. We should have them around for the next couple years, which will be a nice bonus to our light tackle fishing in the Pamlico. The overslot fish took alot of drag from the little 2500 spinning reel and wrapped us around a piece of structure. He was still hooked up, so we flipped the bail over, taking all the pressure off the line. I wasn’t going to let an 11 year-old Roman lose that fish, so I kicked off the BOCO reeboks and jumped in to free the line. Sure enough, Roman caught his fish.
I think these two boys are gonna sleep well tonight.
