I had a bunch of Outer Banks boys on the boat today who wanted to leave the warm waters of the gulf stream for some inland shad action. Capt. Rom Whitaker, Capt. Walt Spruill, and Capt. Rom Whitaker, Jr. made the pilgrimage to Weldon today in hopes of some spring shad action. We had a very dreary day with the weather and despite the water temperature dropping 6-7 degrees since the end of last week (which is a huge drop for the Roanoke River) with this big cold spell we’ve had, we still banged out 40 or more hickories. Capt. Rom caught the only white shad of the day. Capt. Rom Jr. was the sprinter, catching most of his fish earlier in the trip, and Capt. Walt made a late run hooking a double on the first cast he connected with some fish. We were just about the only boat on the water. We all had a great time, which is pretty much what you should expect while shad fishing.
